The Malian Armed Forces have declared a renewed initiative, asserting full command over contested zones previously targeted by attacks from the Azawad Liberation Front in the north and the Support Group for Islam and Muslims, an Al-Qaeda affiliate, active in central and southern Mali.
An official statement from the FAMA (Armed Forces of Mali) detailed ongoing confrontations on Sunday near Anifif, situated in the northeast—roughly 110 kilometers south of Kidal—following the arrival of fresh reinforcements for the Azawad Liberation Front.
The army’s communiqué underscored the resilience of its units, stating: “Confronted with intensified pressure, Malian troops maintained relentless offensive operations throughout the day, demonstrating both bravery and tactical discipline.” It also reaffirmed unwavering confidence in the military’s capacity to safeguard national sovereignty, protect civilians, and dismantle hostile factions.
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Azawad Liberation Front, Mohamed Mouloud Ramadan, had previously asserted control over Anfif amid renewed clashes. In a response to earlier reports, he categorically denied claims regarding the death of the group’s leader, Mbarek Ag Akli, insisting that the commander continues to oversee military operations across northern Mali.
