Mason Greenwood’s transfer saga has taken yet another dramatic turn, with the English winger now set to join Fenerbahçe instead of AS Roma. The move comes as Olympique de Marseille (OM) faces financial constraints, pushing the club to offload high-earning players to balance their books and reduce payroll.
Initially, Greenwood was expected to become a key target for AS Roma under manager Gian Piero Gasperini. However, the switch to Fenerbahçe has raised eyebrows in Italian football circles, where analysts question the reliability of such last-minute transfers. The uncertainty surrounding Greenwood’s future has left many wondering whether the player truly desired a move to Roma or if the deal collapsed due to unresolved issues.
Italian experts question Greenwood’s transfer reliability
Italian football commentator Roberto Pruzzo expressed his skepticism about the situation, stating, “Greenwood? This kind of negotiation always ends badly. We don’t even know if the player genuinely wanted to join Roma, and in the end, he ends up at Fenerbahçe. Rarely do we see a scenario where someone says, ‘This is the player I want,’ and then signs them two hours later.”
His colleague Fernando Orsi added, “Football doesn’t stop for Greenwood. He doesn’t strike me as a reliable figure, and with half that budget, Roma could have found someone who better fits Gasperini’s vision. The World Cup is a showcase for players.”
Roma’s alternative options gain attention
Paolo Marcacci, another Italian football analyst, highlighted Roma’s potential alternatives, mentioning, “Moreira is a top player, a profile that perfectly aligns with Gasperini’s philosophy. His market value has risen, partly thanks to the World Cup, but we’ll have to wait and see. The same goes for Nusa, Garnacho, and others. Then there’s Tresoldi, who delivered a strong season. Gasperini could refine Moreira into an even more complete player. Greenwood’s salary was simply out of reach for Italian clubs, and signing him would mean forfeiting Champions League participation.”
