Strengthening strategic ties between Morocco and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa took center stage during a high-level meeting in Addis Ababa. The discussion brought together Mohamed Arrouchi, Morocco’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the African Union and the UN Economic Commission for Africa, with Claver Gatete, Executive Secretary of the commission.
The agenda focused on ways to deepen collaboration while highlighting Morocco’s unwavering commitment to African integration and continental development.
Morocco’s role in advancing African economic cooperation
Claver Gatete praised Morocco for its pivotal role in organizing the 58th session of the African Ministers of Finance, Economic Planning, and Development conference held in Tangier from March 28 to April 3. He also acknowledged the Kingdom’s consistent support for the commission’s initiatives over the years.
During the meeting, Gatete commended Morocco’s innovative model in technical and vocational education and training, which integrates skill development, cutting-edge technologies—including artificial intelligence—and industrialization needs. He emphasized the importance of scaling this model across the continent to address Africa’s evolving economic and technological landscape.
“Morocco’s experience in technical and vocational training stands as a benchmark for Africa,” Gatete noted. “Its ability to combine modern education with industrial demands makes it a valuable template for other nations seeking sustainable growth.”
A history of partnership and shared progress
Since the establishment of the UN Economic Commission for Africa in 1958, Morocco has been an active participant, contributing to regional cooperation and accelerating the continent’s economic integration. The recent dialogue reaffirmed the Kingdom’s dedication to these long-standing efforts.
The meeting underscored the growing importance of South-South cooperation in driving Africa’s development agenda, with both sides committing to further collaboration in key sectors.
