This Tuesday in Rabat, Hicham Balaoui, head of the Public Prosecution, led the inauguration of the new permanent headquarters for the African Prosecutors Association. The event marked a pivotal moment in judicial collaboration across the continent.
The ceremony brought together key figures, including Renson Ingonga, the Kenyan president of the Association, and Hicham Balaoui, who also serves as its secretary-general. Together, they formalized the transfer of the Association’s headquarters from Mozambique to Morocco through a signed agreement.
Attendees praised Morocco’s strategic position in Africa, highlighting the nation’s judicial institutions as trusted pillars of professional integrity. Under the leadership of King Mohammed VI, the Kingdom continues to strengthen its role as a hub for continental justice initiatives.
Among the dignitaries present were Mohamed Abdennabaoui, vice-president of the Higher Council of the Judiciary, and Abdelatif Amrani, Morocco’s treasurer general, alongside other judicial leaders.
Strengthening African judicial cooperation
The event underscored Morocco’s commitment to fostering judicial ties across Africa. Discussions focused on enhancing coordination mechanisms among African judicial bodies, with the Association’s executive committee finalizing its work agenda and reviewing proposed updates to its statutes. Membership contributions were also addressed during the meeting.
In his opening speech, Hicham Balaoui emphasized collaborative efforts between African police forces and prosecutors’ offices. He stressed the urgency of sharing expertise to combat evolving threats, including transnational organized crime, corruption, human trafficking, and cybercrime.
A new chapter for continental justice
Participants lauded the African Prosecutors Association’s pivotal role in uniting judicial professionals. The new Rabat-based headquarters symbolizes a structured framework for dialogue and joint action, enabling African prosecutors to tackle shared challenges in criminal justice.
With this permanent seat in place, Morocco solidifies its leadership in Africa’s judicial landscape. The inauguration also sets a new institutional tone for cross-border prosecutorial collaboration, crucial in an era of rising transnational crime.
