In Senegal, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye is set to establish his own political party, marking a definitive split from his former ally Ousmane Sonko and their shared political platform, the Pastef.

To spearhead this initiative, Aminata Touré, a senior advisor to the president, has been tasked with assembling a dedicated team to draft the new party’s framework and structure.

Until recently, Bassirou Diomaye Faye was a prominent figure within the Pastef, the ruling party led by Ousmane Sonko, who held the position of Prime Minister. However, his dismissal in May concluded months of escalating tensions and indirect confrontations between the two former collaborators.

These political upheavals unfold against a backdrop of economic strain in Senegal, exacerbated by the fallout from undisclosed debt revelations under the prior administration.

With local elections slated for 2027, both leaders are now strategizing to gauge their respective influence across the nation. The growing rift between them underscores a deeper ideological and personal divide that appears irreversible.
