Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has issued a direct mandate to all relevant ministerial departments, urging them to implement comprehensive measures for flood prevention before the onset of the upcoming rainy season in Sénégal.

During a pivotal Council of Ministers meeting held this Wednesday, the head of government delivered firm directives aimed at significantly enhancing the nation’s preparedness and proactive response to the anticipated challenges of the wet season. Government spokesperson Marie Rose Faye underscored the immediate necessity of deploying several critical, urgent actions without delay.

The Prime Minister further emphasized the crucial importance of strategically pre-positioning intervention resources. Moreover, he called for the organization of an inter-ministerial simulation exercise, scheduled to take place before June 15, 2026. This exercise is designed to rigorously test the operational capacity and responsiveness of state services in the face of potential natural disasters.

A communiqué from the Council of Ministers confirms that the government is actively pursuing various preparatory initiatives. These include the crucial task of clearing water evacuation networks, meticulously verifying drainage infrastructure, deploying essential pumping equipment, and meticulously developing robust emergency plans specifically tailored for high-risk zones.

Recognizing the inherently cross-cutting nature of effective flood control, Ousmane Sonko has called upon all government entities to operate in seamless synergy. This collaborative effort will be expertly coordinated by the Ministry of Hydraulics and Sanitation, with vital support from the Ministry of Interior, particularly concerning civil protection matters and comprehensive crisis management strategies.
