The Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) have issued a fresh directive prohibiting unauthorized use of smartphones by troops in combat zones, citing serious security risks.
In an official communication released on July 9, 2026, the acting spokesperson for the FARDC, Lieutenant-Colonel Mak Hazukay, emphasized that even a single misused device could compromise entire military operations. He warned that active smartphones could reveal troop positions, expose movement patterns, and facilitate enemy targeting, potentially leading to ambushes or coordinated attacks against Congolese units.
Strict measures to prevent information leaks
The army has ordered all soldiers deployed in conflict areas—particularly in the volatile South Kivu region, where clashes with the M23 rebel alliance persist—to avoid sharing real-time updates, coordinates, or operational details via social media or messaging platforms. Troops are also instructed to report any suspicious use of communication devices and to adhere strictly to established protocols governing mobile phone usage in active theaters of operation.
Repeated warnings amid ongoing tensions
This is not the first time such measures have been enforced. Similar incidents occurred earlier this year when videos surfaced online showing soldiers in Goma and surrounding areas criticizing their conditions during frontline engagements. At the time, the FARDC issued urgent reminders to maintain operational secrecy and prevent leaks that could embolden rebel forces. Despite these warnings, new footage has again emerged from the Fizi and Mwenga highlands, prompting the latest crackdown.

In urging troops to prioritize mission success over personal communication, the FARDC stressed that discipline and operational security are non-negotiable. Commanders have been tasked with monitoring adherence to the ban and ensuring that soldiers understand the potentially catastrophic consequences of failing to comply. The military leadership has called for unwavering professionalism, urging all personnel to remain focused on their duties and to protect sensitive information at all costs.
