Gabon’s manganese sector shifts toward local processing
The Gabonese manganese industry has faced significant challenges in logistics, with production plummeting to 9.1 million tons in the latest quarter. Repeated breakdowns and bottlenecks along the Transgabonais railway line, critical for transporting ore to Owendo Port, disrupted operations. Yet, signs of recovery emerged in the final quarter of 2025, signaling a potential turnaround.
Production rebounded strongly, driven by the restart of operations at Moanda and Franceville mines. According to economic authorities, output surged by 10.8% compared to the previous quarter, reflecting renewed momentum in the sector. Beyond extraction, Gabon is now prioritizing local mineral processing to add value to its resources.
Strategic partnership drives industrial transformation
In July 2026, Gabon’s government and the French multinational Eramet formalized a landmark agreement in Paris. Under this deal, Eramet committed to processing up to 700,000 tons of manganese ore annually within Gabon by the end of 2031. Three strategic pathways are under consideration: upgrading the Moanda metallurgical complex, establishing processing units at Owendo, or constructing a manganese oxide plant for battery production near Libreville.
Addressing public concerns, the Ministry of Industry clarified that Eramet’s pledge represents only part of the broader industrialization effort. Other mining operators are also expected to contribute to the national transformation agenda.
Sustainability and energy challenges take center stage
Eramet is not only focusing on production scale but also on sustainability. The company is exploring renewable energy solutions and integrating biocharcoal into its operations to align with Gabon’s environmental goals. This dual strategy underscores the industry’s preparations for a major regulatory milestone: the 2029 ban on exporting raw manganese ore.
The shift toward local processing marks a decisive step in Gabon’s economic diversification, reducing reliance on raw material exports while fostering industrial growth and job creation.
