OGC Nice and FC Lorient kicked off their Ligue 1 campaign this Saturday, concluding their opening day fixture with a goalless draw (0-0).

After finishing 16th last season, Nice was eager to reignite their momentum and cement their position in Ligue 1. This renewed determination was evident from the start against an FC Lorient side that impressed under Olivier Pantaloni last season, who now leads the Gym.

In this inaugural match, dedicated to the memory of Eric Roy, the Corsican coach deployed his customary 3-4-3 formation. The promising 17-year-old Junior Mandza, who shone during pre-season, earned a starting spot in defense. In midfield, Everton Pereira was given the nod ahead of Issiaga Camara. The Eagles’ manager also placed his trust in Gauthier Hein, forming an attacking trident with Sofian Diop and Zoumana Diallo. Jonathan Clauss proudly wore the captain’s armband.

A notable statistic: FC Lorient has not secured a victory on Niçois soil since April 2014, when they triumphed 1-2.

An active start, lacking precision

Following an initial ten-minute period of observation where Lorient appeared more organized, Théo Le Bris delivered a threatening cross from the right flank towards Koné, who narrowly missed connecting with the ball. Nice quickly asserted themselves: in the 14th minute, Sofiane Diop capitalized on a slip by Kouassi inside the box to unleash a shot, which was expertly saved by Mvogo. This was swiftly followed by another sequence where attempts from Gauthier Hein and Jonathan Clauss were thwarted by the resilient Breton defense.

However, Nice could not afford to become complacent. In the 21st minute, Coulibaly lost possession dangerously outside his own area, allowing Makengo to recover the ball and fire a shot just inches wide of the top corner. Yehvann Diouf then committed another error with his distribution, though he redeemed himself with a superb save against Bernardeau. Just before half-time, Everton Pereira believed he had broken the deadlock with a flick-on from a corner, but a foul on Cadiou was whistled.

“We had some scares, but that’s how we play. Up front, we create chances; it’s just about fine-tuning the small details to convert them,” a reassured Antoine Mendy commented to Ligue 1+.

A less eventful second half

Upon resuming play after the interval, the match’s rhythm underwent a significant shift. Both teams settled into a prolonged period of mutual containment. Around the hour mark, Noah Cadiou and then Mamadou Koné tested the Eagles’ goalkeeper in a well-orchestrated attacking sequence, but found him unyielding.

New striker Nathan Ngoumou, introduced as a substitute, had his moment in the 83rd minute, attempting to carve out a shooting angle within the penalty area, only to see his effort once again blocked. The final scare arrived in added time, when a precise cross allowed Lorient’s forward, Tosin, to unleash a powerful header that sailed just over Yehvann Diouf‘s crossbar.

For Sofiane Diop, improving ball retention, which was often clumsy today, is a key area for development: “We can’t afford to hand ammunition to our opponents every weekend.”

This result marks the sixth consecutive season that the Gym has failed to win its opening match. Next week, Nice will journey to the capital to face Paris FC. The encounter is scheduled for Sunday, August 30, at 3 PM.
