The Malian Armed Forces (FAMA) have declared a decisive shift in the conflict, asserting full operational control across regions previously targeted by coordinated attacks from the Azauad Liberation Front (FLA) in the north and the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), an Al-Qaeda affiliate, in central and southern Mali.
In an official statement, military officials confirmed that intense clashes persisted on Sunday at Anifif, located in the northeastern sector of the country, approximately 110 kilometers south of Kidal. The confrontation followed the arrival of additional fighters and military resources dispatched to reinforce the FLA’s positions.
According to the army’s communiqué, Malian troops demonstrated unwavering resolve, sustaining combat operations throughout the day with professionalism and bravery. The statement underscored the army’s « absolute confidence in its ability to safeguard national unity, protect civilian populations, and decisively defeat hostile forces. »
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Azauad Liberation Front, Mohamed Mouloud Ramadan, had previously claimed control over Anifif following the resumption of hostilities. He also refuted reports of the death of the group’s leader, Mbarek Ag Akli, insisting that the commander remains actively engaged in directing military operations across northern Mali.
