With the summer transfer window in full swing, Stade Rennais has made a decisive move to reinforce its defensive line. Manager Franck Haise has finalized the signing of American right-back Bryan Reynolds, bringing an end to weeks of speculation surrounding the club’s defensive reshuffle.
Reynolds arrives as Kaboré’s move collapses
The acquisition of Reynolds, a player known for his pace and crossing ability, fills a long-standing gap in Rennes’ right-back position. The club’s leadership, aiming for a more dynamic and attack-minded defensive structure, pushed through the €4 million deal without delay. However, this strategic move has had a significant consequence: it has effectively shut the door on the potential arrival of Burkinabè international Issa Kaboré.
Kaboré, on loan at Wrexham last season, had been a key target for Rennes’ recruitment team. His impressive performances—32 appearances and 8 assists in all competitions—demonstrated his attacking prowess and adaptability, qualities that aligned with the club’s tactical vision. Despite his strong showing, the club has now shifted its focus entirely to Reynolds.
Why Kaboré missed out on a Ligue 1 return
Franck Haise had initially viewed Kaboré as a reliable option for the right-back role. The Burkinabè defender’s prior experience in the Ligue 1, notably during his brief stint at Olympique de Marseille in 2022-23, made him a familiar face in the league’s physical demands. Though his time at Marseille was cut short, his standout loan spell in England reignited interest in his potential.
Now back at Manchester City, Kaboré is not part of the Premier League champions’ long-term plans. With a contract running until June 2027 and a transfer value estimated at around €4 million by Transfermarkt, the defender presented an attractive financial proposition. Ultimately, however, Rennes opted for Reynolds, leaving Kaboré’s future in flux.
Troyes emerges as potential new destination
With Rennes’ interest withdrawn, Kaboré is expected to attract suitors eager to secure his services. Manchester City has signaled openness to either a permanent transfer or another loan deal to facilitate the move.
Rumors suggest an unexpected opportunity may arise at ESTAC Troyes, which has reportedly expressed strong interest in the defender. For the former Marseille player, Troyes could offer a fresh start with a competitive project, providing him the playing time needed to rebuild his reputation in Ligue 1 ahead of the 2026-27 season.
