The Speaker of the National Assembly, Ousmane Sonko, has acknowledged the Constitutional Council’s ruling that declared the recently passed constitutional reform bill unconstitutional. In a public statement, Sonko, who also leads the Pastef party, emphasized that the decision of the ‘Seven Sages’ must be respected by all stakeholders.
‘Beyond any interpretations or differing opinions on the motivations behind the ruling, one thing is clear: this decision is binding for everyone. Duly noted,’ Sonko wrote in his official communication.
The head of parliament went on to highlight the importance of institutional roles in maintaining stability. ‘This episode demonstrates that when each institution operates within its designated sphere, no crisis can arise,’ he remarked.
Reaffirming his commitment to democratic processes, Sonko underscored the National Assembly’s determination to fulfill its legislative duties. ‘Parliament will continue to exercise its mandate fully. Laws will be debated, passed, or rejected in accordance with our promises to the resilient people we serve,’ he stated.
