Senegal’s leadership transition: outgoing premier warns incoming pm

The handover ceremony at the Prime Minister’s Office marked a significant moment in Senegal’s political landscape. Newly appointed Prime Minister Ahmadou Al Aminou Lô paid tribute to his predecessor, Ousmane Sonko, while underscoring their shared commitment to the nation’s development agenda. The event highlighted a spirit of mutual respect and institutional continuity between the two leaders.
During the formal transition, the outgoing Prime Minister reflected on the journey that brought them together. « In April 2024, he reached out to me. We didn’t know each other, but I came. He trusted me, » the incoming leader recounted, describing the beginning of their collaboration under the National Transformation Agenda. He also acknowledged being entrusted with key executive responsibilities, stating, « The Head of State called upon me to support this agenda, and the results have been widely recognized. »
Al Aminou Lô emphasized the importance of maintaining strong communication channels during the transition. « Sonko invited me to serve as a bridge between the Prime Minister’s Office and the Presidency for the National Transformation Agenda, » he noted. « I’ve done precisely that, » he added, highlighting the collaborative framework that defined their work.
Recalling frequent interactions with his predecessor, he shared, « Whenever I needed to consult or report, he welcomed me with openness and support. » The handover was not just an institutional formality but a deeply personal exchange. « It’s an honor to take on this role with someone who has always wished the best for Senegal and supported me generously, » he remarked, praising Sonko’s dignified conduct during the ceremony.
The incoming Prime Minister also revealed a candid conversation with Sonko, who had forewarned him of the challenges ahead. « He made it clear: this will be a difficult path, » Al Aminou Lô disclosed. Despite the hurdles, he expressed his intent to continue the cooperative approach, stating, « I will seek his guidance whenever necessary, relying on his experience to navigate the complexities of governance. »
