The prospect of Julian Alvarez joining either Paris Saint-Germain or FC Barcelona before the summer transfer window closes has gained significant momentum. While both European giants are keen, Barcelona holds a distinct advantage, as the 26-year-old Atlético Madrid forward has been actively pushing, both publicly and behind the scenes, for a move to the Catalan club. However, as football icon Luis Suarez recently suggested, Alvarez’s desired transfer might ultimately be deferred until next year.

“A player as astute as Julian, considering his journey from River Plate, through Manchester City, Atlético, and his national team commitments, would arrive and seamlessly adapt because he understands his role.” Following Pedri’s earlier endorsement, which rolled out the red carpet for Julian Alvarez’s potential move to FC Barcelona during an interview with RTVE, it was Luis Suarez’s turn to weigh in on this highly anticipated transfer scenario for Mundo Deportivo. The Argentine international reportedly leveraged his involvement in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers with the Albiceleste to openly convey his desire to depart Atlético Madrid and realize his “dream” of playing for FC Barcelona.
Leaving Atlético: a challenging prospect
“He is a player with an incredible work ethic. At Barcelona, he would have wingers creating numerous opportunities for him. He possesses excellent passing ability and clever movement. He would integrate into Barça immediately. But there’s the other side of the coin. He’s currently with a major club like Atlético. It’s going to be tough for him to leave.” These upcoming weeks promise to be fascinating, continued the former FC Barcelona striker, who enjoyed a stellar period with the Blaugrana institution between 2014 and 2020. While Barcelona may have the player’s clear preference, they certainly do not yet have the blessing of Atlético Madrid, who are determined to resist his departure throughout the summer, right up until the transfer deadline of September 1, 2026.
“Stay this year; next year, you can go anywhere”
Paris Saint-Germain, having shown interest in Julian Alvarez for the past two years, appears likely to miss out on him this time. However, this might only be a temporary setback. Drawing upon his own past experience, Luis Suarez recounted how he was persuaded to remain at Liverpool in 2013 before ultimately making his move to FC Barcelona a year later.
“These are situations that players sometimes create. I experienced it myself at Liverpool. In 2013, I pushed for a transfer because I wanted to join Arsenal. I had a disagreement with the club because we hadn’t qualified for the Champions League, and I felt I needed to take the next step. I remember the captain, Gerrard, took me aside and said: ‘Stay. Next year, you can go wherever you want: to Barcelona, to Real Madrid, to Bayern… But this year, please, stay. You cannot go to Arsenal.’ And he convinced me. In Julian’s specific case, the same scenario could unfold: Cholo (Simeone) might take him aside and say, ‘This year, I need you to stay with us.’ For me, it was a Liverpool legend, the captain, who convinced me. I listened to reason, then went out to apologize, and it ended up being my best season at the club. Fans, even if a player tries to force a move, will ultimately applaud them if they see them giving their all on the pitch, working hard, and defending the club.”
