The disciplinary commission of France’s professional football league has upheld Le Mans FC’s 2-0 victory over Bastia, securing the club’s promotion to Ligue 1 just hours after thousands of fans celebrated on the terraces.

The wait is over. Le Mans FC is officially promoted to Ligue 1 football. The club from the Sarthe region finished second in the 2025-2026 Ligue 2 season after securing a 2-0 away win against Bastia on Saturday, May 9. The disciplinary commission of France’s professional football league confirmed the result on Wednesday, May 13, just as club president announced the promotion to the 24,000-strong crowd gathered at the Marie Marvingt stadium.

Final match disrupted by crowd disturbances

The outcome of the season hinged on the result of this match. The referee, Ruddy Buquet, had halted play following flares thrown onto the pitch after Le Mans’ second goal in stoppage time. He announced shortly after that play would not resume, but he never blew the final whistle.

A disciplinary decision required

With no final whistle recorded, the case fell to the disciplinary commission to determine the match result and impose sanctions on the Corsican club. Bastia’s supporters had disrupted the game, leading to a two-match stadium ban with two games to be played behind closed doors and one suspended.
