Olympique Lyonnais denied postponement of first Ligue 1 match against Toulouse

Olympique Lyonnais sought to postpone its opening Ligue 1 fixture against Toulouse amid potential Champions League playoff commitments, but the French Football League (LFP) rejected the request.

The LFP has been approached multiple times regarding schedule adjustments. While Olympique Lyonnais is set to face Toulouse in their Ligue 1 opener on August 22, the club sought to delay the match due to overlapping Champions League playoff fixtures. The Gones are scheduled to play a third qualifying round tie, with a first leg on August 4 or 5 and the return on August 11.

However, if Lyon progresses further in the Champions League, midweek playoff matches would require two additional fixtures between Ligue 1 fixtures. This request mirrors similar appeals made by Paris Saint-Germain and Strasbourg earlier in the year. Yet, the LFP has declined Olympique Lyonnais’ proposal.

Ligue 1’s opening day remains unchanged

The LFP’s board of directors, meeting via videoconference Monday evening, formally rejected Lyon’s request. The governing body emphasized its commitment to maintaining the integrity of the Ligue 1 schedule, particularly for the season’s inaugural matchday. Notably, next season’s league matches will be exclusively broadcast on Ligue 1+.

Should Lyon qualify for the Champions League playoffs, they will be required to fit their Toulouse away game into their schedule between two European fixtures.
