Lucas Chevalier was originally seen as the long-term successor to Gianluigi Donnarumma in goal for PSG, but lost his starting role during the season to Matvey Safonov. However, the Parisian club has chosen not to part ways with the French goalkeeper this summer.

PSG opts to keep Lucas Chevalier

Last summer, PSG stayed relatively quiet in the transfer market but still executed a major change between the posts. Gianluigi Donnarumma departed after a strong second half of the season, and in came Lucas Chevalier from LOSC for around €40 million, not including bonuses. The Frenchman was touted as the club’s future number one for years to come. Yet after a disappointing start, he quickly lost his place to Matvey Safonov.

A young goalkeeper arrives

The Russian international has since cemented his spot in goal for PSG, helping the team secure back-to-back Champions League titles. This might suggest an uncertain future for the former Lille player at the club, but PSG’s management has decided to keep him. No transfer is planned for Lucas Chevalier, who reportedly impressed the coaching staff with his attitude and the signals he sent during the second part of the season.

At the same time, PSG is planning for the future in goal. Alessandro Longoni, an 18-year-old Italian goalkeeper, will join the club on a free transfer from AC Milan. His arrival compensates for the departure of Renato Marin, who will be loaned for one season to CD Nacional in the Portuguese top flight. So while Matvey Safonov and Lucas Chevalier will continue to battle for the starting spot next season, the long-term picture may eventually feature Alessandro Longoni and Renato Marin.
