Spanish football’s top tier, LaLiga, has confirmed the postponement of the highly anticipated fixture between Celta Vigo and Osasuna, originally scheduled for this Sunday at 21:30 CET during the opening weekend of the league campaign.
The decision follows an urgent inspection of the pitch at Balaídos, home ground of Celta Vigo, which revealed severe fungal contamination rendering the playing surface unsafe for professional competition. League officials conducted the assessment throughout Tuesday, with the findings prompting immediate action to safeguard both player welfare and match integrity.
According to an official statement released by LaLiga, the rescheduled date has been set for Thursday, 27 August, with kick-off moved forward to 20:30 CET. This adjustment aligns with the league’s operational autonomy, granted midway through the previous season, eliminating the need for further approval from Spain’s national football federation.
The governing body emphasized that the new arrangement was coordinated in close consultation with both participating clubs and the federation to ensure minimal disruption to the broader fixture calendar. The move comes as part of broader contingency measures already in place for the season’s opening slate, after three additional fixtures—Valencia vs Real Betis, Real Madrid vs Real Sociedad, and Barcelona vs Athletic Bilbao—were also deferred due to logistical concerns.
