Chelsea’s Ukrainian midfielder, Mykhailo Mudryk, has seen his four-year doping suspension lifted with immediate effect, clearing him to return to Premier League action. This decision follows a re-evaluation of his case in light of updated anti-doping regulations.

The initial ban was imposed in 2024 after a routine anti-doping control detected a minimal concentration of meldonium, a prohibited substance, in Mudryk’s sample. Following the sanction, the player had lodged an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

However, recent amendments to the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) rules have significantly altered the landscape for such cases. Under the revised guidelines, an identical test result today would not trigger an anti-doping procedure, meaning no suspension would have been issued.

The Football Association (FA) confirmed these regulatory changes in a statement. “While a retroactive review of the original result is not possible, the positive control for Mudryk would not lead to a suspension under current rules,” the FA elaborated. “The concentration of meldonium identified in Mudryk’s sample would not have been flagged, consequently preventing any anti-doping rule violation.”

Considering these crucial developments and other specific circumstances surrounding the case, the FA and Mykhailo Mudryk reached an amicable settlement, which received full endorsement from WADA. As part of this agreement, Mudryk acknowledged a breach of anti-doping regulations and accepted a suspension period, which he has now fully served.

Consequently, the talented winger is no longer under suspension and is immediately eligible to resume competitive play for his Premier League club.
