In a significant N’Djamena security crackdown, a joint security commission in Chad’s capital recently apprehended 252 individuals and confiscated numerous illicit items and substances. This comprehensive sweep underscores the nation’s unwavering commitment to enhancing public safety and combating criminal activities throughout its bustling capital.
Targeting criminal hotspots
On Saturday, August 1, 2026, a broad sweep was initiated across several areas identified as high-crime zones within N’Djamena. The operation involved a coordinated effort from various law enforcement and security units, including the Garde nationale et nomade du Tchad (GNNT), the Gendarmerie nationale, the Police nationale, the Police judiciaire, and specialized services. This robust intervention led to the questioning and arrest of 252 individuals, alongside the seizure of a range of prohibited objects and illegal substances.
Specific neighborhoods targeted during this intensive operation included Mandjakoli in the 5th arrondissement, Roma, Bildo, and Katanga in the 2nd arrondissement, as well as Colombie and other key districts across the capital.
Illicit substances and contraband seized
Hachim Haroum Deby, the Director of Public Security, confirmed that the N’Djamena anti-crime operation successfully apprehended both vendors and consumers of various narcotic substances. Among the illicit products confiscated were drugs commonly known as “Colorado” and “Bongo,” alongside a quantity of adulterated alcohol.
The mission was carried out under the direct supervision of the Director General of the Gendarmerie nationale, who also serves as the Deputy President of the Joint Control and Verification Commission. Key figures such as the 1st Deputy Police Controller General and the 2nd Deputy Commander of the Garde nationale et nomade du Tchad (GNNT) also played active roles in overseeing the operation.
Following the intervention, all 252 apprehended individuals were presented to the press. Security forces also displayed a significant cache of seized items, including various weapons, computers, mobile phones, and 25 motorcycles.
The comprehensive findings and results of the operation were subsequently presented to the Minister of Public Security and Immigration, General Ali Ahmat Aghabache.
