Senegal’s political landscape is bracing for a critical moment as national assembly president Ousmane Sonko takes a firm stand against any delay in the upcoming local elections scheduled for January 2027. The PASTEF leader has dismissed mounting speculation about postponing the vote, emphasizing that such a move would be unacceptable after the sacrifices made to preserve electoral integrity.
Electoral calendar must be respected, Sonko declares
Sonko addressed growing concerns about potential postponements, stressing that the January 2027 local elections are not a matter of convenience but a constitutional obligation. « Three lives were lost to prevent the postponement of the presidential election. What justification exists today to delay the first major election following President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s inauguration? » he questioned.
The 2024 legislative elections, he noted, were an exception due to the dissolution of the National Assembly before the end of its term. In contrast, the 2027 local elections are firmly anchored in the electoral calendar. « We will not accept excuses about readiness. When election day arrives, citizens must cast their votes. By January 2027, we must head to the polls, » Sonko asserted.
Legal mandate overrides political maneuvering
The PASTEF president underscored that the legal framework for these elections is already in place, making any postponement a violation of democratic principles. « Voter registration should have already begun, yet it remains undone. We fought tirelessly—some paid the ultimate price—to prevent election delays. We cannot tolerate tactics aimed at pushing back the vote now, » he declared.
Party strength reflected in voter card sales
Despite political turbulence, Sonko expressed confidence in PASTEF’s dominance, pointing to the ongoing sale of voter cards as a barometer of future electoral performance. « The results of card sales give us a clear preview of our electoral prospects even before voting begins. These operations serve as a reliable indicator of our grassroots strength, » he concluded.
