The pursuit of Julian Alvarez continues to intensify, with Paris Saint-Germain reportedly rekindling their long-standing interest in the Argentine forward. This comes two years after their initial attempts before Alvarez ultimately joined Atletico de Madrid from Manchester City. However, the Parisian giants now face fresh competition, as FC Barcelona appears ready to challenge for his signature, a prospect openly welcomed by Barcelona midfielder Pedri.

The future of Julian Alvarez has become a prominent storyline in the early days of the summer transfer window, which officially commenced on June 15th and is set to close on September 1st. The 26-year-old Argentine international is currently participating in his second World Cup with Argentina on the American continent. Despite being contractually bound to Atletico de Madrid until 2030, the dynamic forward has indicated that he does not plan to return to the Spanish capital once the curtain falls on the 2026 World Cup.

“I think what’s best for everyone is a transfer”

Following Argentina’s recent qualification for the 1/16ths of the 2026 World Cup after a decisive 2-0 victory over Austria on Monday, Julian Alvarez used the mixed zone as an opportunity to publicly articulate his desire for a move. He strongly hinted at a preference for joining FC Barcelona. “This isn’t the moment to discuss it, but I also cannot hide; I strive to be an honest person. I’ve spoken with people at Atlético de Madrid, and I believe what’s best for everyone is a transfer. I want to achieve my dream.”

“I hope this transfer can happen, and if so, then all the better”

This development poses a significant challenge for PSG, who, much like in the summer of 2024 before his move to Atletico de Madrid, have consistently kept a close watch on the situation of the prolific striker. Adding to their predicament, FC Barcelona is already laying out the red carpet for Julian Alvarez. This sentiment was clearly expressed by Pedri during his interview with RTVE. “A transfer for Julian Alvarez to FC Barcelona? I think many things would need to align for that to happen. I don’t want to interfere with the club’s affairs, nor those of a player. It’s true that I adore Julian as a player, and I’ve always said that I want the best players at Barça. I hope this transfer can happen, and if so, then all the better.” The FC Barcelona midfielder has publicly initiated the discussion; it remains to be seen whether Paris Saint-Germain will respond publicly or behind the scenes to tip the scales in their favor in the race for Alvarez’s signature.
