After 64 years of diplomatic relations between Canada and Benin, the Canadian government has established its first full-fledged embassy in Cotonou. The inauguration ceremony, held on August 5, 2026, was led by Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Anita Anand, during an official visit to Benin. The event brought together Benin’s Foreign Minister, Corinne Amori Brunet, diplomatic corps representatives, and key officials including Hugues Oscar Lokossou, Benin’s Minister Delegate for External Resource Mobilization and Debt Management.

This strategic move underscores the deepening friendship between the two nations and their shared commitment to elevating bilateral cooperation. The new embassy will enhance political dialogue, streamline monitoring of mutual commitments, and solidify collaboration in critical sectors such as trade, security, and human development.

« Canada is eager to deepen its partnership with Benin, and today’s inauguration signals a renewed energy in our relationship, » stated Anita Anand. Her Beninese counterpart, Corinne Amori Brunet, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that the embassy’s opening symbolizes a stronger, more dynamic alliance. « Our cooperation is expanding—enriching our economies, fostering innovation, and advancing shared values in security and human development. New diplomatic framework signed

Earlier that morning, Anita Anand and Corinne Amori Brunet signed a Memorandum of Understanding on political and diplomatic consultations. The agreement establishes a structured framework for regular high-level discussions, ensuring consistent follow-up on bilateral commitments and improved coordination on regional and global issues.

A strategic gathering of leaders

The discussions extended beyond foreign affairs, engaging Benin’s Minister of Tourism and Foreign Trade, Olushegun Adjadi Bakari—responsible for Industry and Private Investment Promotion—as well as Gildas Agonkan, Benin’s Minister Delegate for National Defense. The expanded session also included Hugues Oscar Lokossou, reinforcing the embassy’s role in fostering cross-sectoral collaboration.
