In Bongouanou, the Ivorian government has forcefully reiterated its “zero tolerance” stance against female genital mutilation (FGM) following a brutal incident involving five young girls. The Ministry of Women, Family and Children confirmed this unwavering commitment after the violent excisions in the region.

The horrific events unfolded during the night of Tuesday, June 30, 2026, within the Dioulakro neighborhood of Kangandi village, situated in the Bongouanou commune. The five victims, ranging in age from three to nine years old, endured what has been described as an act of “extreme violence.” This barbaric practice resulted in significant hemorrhages, urinary retention, and severe psychological trauma for the young minors.

Promptly alerted by an anonymous tip, teams from the regional directorate of Women, Family and Children, the judicial protection service for children and youth (SPJEJ), and the Bongouanou police station immediately mobilized to rescue the children.

After receiving urgent care at the Bongouanou Departmental Public Hospital (EPHD), the five girls are now safe and secure in a specialized center operating under the Ministry’s protection. Here, they are benefiting from comprehensive medical, psychological, and social support.

On the judicial front, law enforcement officers apprehended two suspects during their initial intervention. The appropriate authorities have been notified and are actively working to identify and bring to justice all individuals involved, including perpetrators and accomplices, in this heinous act.

The Ministry underscored that excision remains a severely punishable criminal offense under Ivorian law. This firm condemnation aligns with the national commitments reiterated by First Lady Dominique Ouattara on June 13, 2026, aimed at eradicating all forms of gender-based violence (GBV) across Côte d’Ivoire.

In light of the persistent nature of this grave issue, authorities are urging the public to maintain heightened vigilance and to systematically report any act or attempted act of female genital mutilation.
