The Malian Armed Forces (FAMA) have declared a significant shift in momentum, asserting full control over regions previously targeted by coordinated attacks. These offensives were launched by the Azawad Liberation Front in northern Mali and the Support Group for Islam and Muslims—an Al-Qaeda affiliate—in central and southern zones.
In an official statement, FAMA confirmed sustained clashes in Anifif, located in the northeastern sector, roughly 110 kilometers south of Kidal. The intensified combat followed the arrival of fresh reinforcements for the Azawad Liberation Front, prompting a robust military response.
The army’s communiqué emphasized: « In response to this calculated aggression, Malian defense units engaged with unwavering resolve, maintaining high-intensity operations throughout the day with precision and discipline. » The statement also underscored « complete confidence in the FAMA’s ability to safeguard national sovereignty, protect civilians, and dismantle enemy forces. »
Meanwhile, the Azawad Liberation Front’s spokesperson, Mohamed Mouloud Ramadan, had previously asserted control over Anifif following the resumption of hostilities. He categorically denied reports of the death of the group’s leader, Mbarek Ag Akli, insisting that the commander remains actively involved in directing military operations across northern Mali.
