The future of higher education took center stage at the Global Summit on the Future of Higher Education, held from June 6, 2026, at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) in Shenzhen, China. Among the delegates was Dr. Mamadou Koumaré, Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Management of Bamako, who represented Mali’s higher education sector. As coordinator of the UNESCO International Centre for Higher Education Innovation (UNESCO-ICHEI) partnership with Malian institutions, Dr. Koumaré played a key role in shaping discussions on transforming education through technology.

The summit brought together policymakers, international organizations, academic leaders, and tech industry pioneers to explore ways to bridge the gap between academia and industry. With a focus on AI-driven education and skill development, participants examined innovative models to enhance learning outcomes across sectors such as agriculture, commerce, and the natural sciences.

Three leading Malian institutions—the Kurukanfuga University of Bamako, the University of Social Sciences and Management of Bamako, and the University Pedagogy Institute—have formalized partnerships with UNESCO-ICHEI to integrate AI and digital tools into their curricula. Dr. Koumaré oversees the International Institute of Online Education (IIOE), which serves as the hub for these collaborative efforts.

UNESCO reaffirmed its dedication to supporting Mali’s higher education sector by providing technical and human resources to foster innovation and inclusivity in learning.
