Moroccan authorities have implemented comprehensive measures to thwart any illegal attempts to cross into Ceuta and Melilla, targeting organizers of a planned mass crossing scheduled for August 15. This was announced by Morocco’s Interior Ministry spokesman Rachid El Khalfi in Rabat, following the emergence of anonymous online posts and social media messages calling for such an attempt.
In a press briefing, Mr. El Khalfi confirmed that security forces have already detained individuals suspected of inciting these actions. Those arrested are undergoing judicial investigation under the supervision of the relevant prosecutor’s office. The ministry warned that such calls pose « severe risks to public safety » and constitute criminal offenses under the law, adding that both participants and organizers of these online campaigns will face legal consequences.

The Interior Ministry emphasized that security operations coordinated by the General Directorate for National Security (DGSN) are not limited to a specific timeframe but represent an ongoing, permanent surveillance system, particularly along border areas near Ceuta and Melilla. This system is continuously strengthened and adapted based on evolving threats and ground-level developments.
Authorities have also urged the public to remain vigilant and avoid falling for deceptive calls that endanger lives. They reiterated that combating irregular migration is carried out strictly in accordance with the law.
Call for Spain to accelerate minor repatriation
The official statement underscored that addressing irregular migration and human trafficking requires a « shared responsibility » approach that cannot be shouldered by one party alone.
In this context, the Moroccan Interior Ministry called on Spanish authorities to fulfill their commitments by expediting the repatriation of unaccompanied minors currently in Ceuta to their families in Morocco. The ministry urged Madrid to overcome administrative and judicial hurdles delaying these returns, always prioritizing the best interests of the minors.
Rabat also reaffirmed the importance of the « immediate return » mechanism, highlighting its proven effectiveness in past operations to strengthen border interventions.
Finally, the ministry assured that Moroccan authorities will continue to act with firmness and responsibility to uphold public order and safety, maintaining a high level of preparedness and constant coordination in full compliance with legal provisions.
