The Moroccan capital, Rabat, played host to a significant diplomatic and security event this week, as high-ranking officials from the Direction générale de la Sûreté nationale (DGSN) and Direction générale de la Surveillance du territoire (DGST) were bestowed with prestigious Spanish honors. The ceremony, held on Thursday, marked a milestone in the robust security cooperation between Morocco and Spain.

The occasion was graced by the presence of a high-level delegation from the Spanish Civil Guard, led by General Luis Peláez Piñeiro, Director of Intelligence, underscoring the importance of the visit. Abdellatif Hammouchi, Director General of the DGSN and DGST, presided over the event, reflecting the deep institutional ties between the two nations.

A press statement from the DGSN highlighted the awards as a testament to the exemplary collaboration in combating terrorism and cross-border crime, which has become a benchmark for international security partnerships. The decorations, issued by Spain’s Minister of the Interior, recognize the outstanding contributions of Moroccan security leaders in enhancing operational coordination and technical assistance.

The ceremony served as a platform to reaffirm the strategic partnership between Morocco and Spain, with General Piñeiro emphasizing the Kingdom’s pivotal role in countering shared security threats. He described Morocco as an “indispensable strategic partner” in the fight against terrorism and organized crime, praising the advanced bilateral security framework that addresses evolving regional and global challenges.

This recent recognition follows earlier accolades awarded to Hammouchi, including the Grand Cross of the Civil Guard Merit in November 2025—the highest honor—and the Police Merit Cross with Red Distinction in 2014. These distinctions underscore the long-standing and impactful security alliance between the two countries.
