Senegal hosts upa’s 85th session: sonko calls for united, sovereign africa
In a warm welcome extended to African delegations gathered in Dakar, Ousmane Sonko, President of Senegal’s National Assembly, officially opened the 85th session of the Executive Committee of the African Parliamentary Union on June 3 and 4, 2026. The event brought together lawmakers from across the continent to discuss pressing issues facing Africa today.
Sonko expressed deep joy and pride in hosting representatives from multiple African parliaments in the Senegalese capital. Addressing the assembly on behalf of the National Assembly and the Senegalese people, he extended heartfelt fraternal greetings and warm wishes to all participants, underscoring the significance of solidarity in these challenging times.
Highlighting the urgent need for stronger parliamentary cooperation, Sonko emphasized how Africa’s political, economic, and security challenges demand collective solutions. He noted that the continent is at a crossroads, where collaboration among parliaments can drive sustainable progress.
« At a time when our continent faces numerous challenges, strengthening parliamentary cooperation has become more vital than ever, » Sonko declared. He reiterated his unwavering commitment to the pan-African vision, stressing that Africa’s future must be shaped by Africans themselves, guided by shared values, aspirations, and interests.
The President expressed his hope that the 85th session would serve as a catalyst for deeper African integration and the advancement of collective ambitions across the continent.
