Kiiraay: A party built on republican values

Hundreds gathered in Dakar to witness the birth of Kiiraay, a name derived from the Wolof language meaning ‘protection’ or ‘shield’. Positioned as the party of ‘Republican Patriots’, the movement emphasizes core national values including republicanism, ethics, transparency, brotherhood, and diligence. President Faye declared his intention to transform Kiiraay into Senegal’s dominant political force. Already, several elected officials and party leaders have defected from the Pastef to join the new presidential movement.

Political rift solidifies amid power struggles

The party’s formation comes after months of escalating tensions between President Faye and former Prime Minister Sonko. While Sonko initially played a pivotal role in securing power for the current administration in 2024, their collaboration ended in May following irreconcilable political and economic differences. Even after his removal from government, Sonko retained his position as Speaker of the National Assembly and leadership of the Pastef, which maintains a significant parliamentary majority.

Shifting political dynamics in Senegal

The emergence of Kiiraay introduces fresh uncertainties into Senegal’s political arena. The party is set to hold its inaugural congress following the rainy season, with the growing rivalry between President Faye and Sonko poised to reshape the nation’s political framework in the coming months.
