Political tensions in Senegal have escalated as discussions around the potential dissolution of the National Assembly intensify. During a recent gathering of the Pastef party in Linguère, opposition leader Ousmane Sonko made his stance clear, issuing a bold warning to President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.
Sonko confident in electoral dominance
Addressing supporters, Sonko asserted that any move to dissolve the Assembly and hold early legislative elections would backfire on the ruling power. He confidently predicted that his party would secure a landslide victory in such a scenario, framing it as the preferred outcome.
« If local elections are held, we will defeat them. If the Assembly is dissolved, it will be even worse for them. And that is exactly what we want, because we will crush them in the polls, » he declared.
The opposition leader went further, suggesting that a potential electoral defeat could politically weaken the head of state.
« After this, I even fear he might step down before 2029, » Sonko added.
Call for restraint among supporters
Beyond electoral strategy, Sonko emphasized the importance of caution among his supporters. He urged them to remain vigilant and avoid falling into traps designed to provoke Pastef into actions that could justify sanctions against the party.
« I call on everyone to stay alert and remain calm. They are actively seeking ways to provoke Pastef so that our young supporters react, giving them an excuse to dissolve the party and revoke its registration, » he cautioned.
Sonko framed the upcoming elections as a « walk in the park » for his party, provided supporters maintain discipline and avoid provocations. His remarks underscore the high stakes and strategic calculations shaping Senegal’s political landscape.
