Ousmane Sonko warns against electoral delay amid institutional tensions
Dakar — The leader of the Patriotes movement has intensified pressure on the president to issue a decree setting the date for upcoming local elections. Ousmane Sonko argues that the same executive authority used to remove officials like Waly Diouf Bodiang from his position at the Port autonome de Dakar should also determine the electoral timeline.
Sonko highlighted the recent dismissals—including that of Fadilou Keïta from the Caisse des dépôts et consignations—as examples of presidential prerogative. However, he emphasized that fixing the election date is equally within the president’s power and must be done without delay. « Whether dismissing officials or setting an election date, these are all decrees within the same authority, » he stated during a rally in the Ndiambour region.
Mounting urgency over electoral calendar
The Patriotes leader reiterated his firm stance against postponing the local elections, a position he has consistently advocated since launching his voter card distribution campaign in late July. Political observers warn that the president has only a few days left to sign the decree before the legal framework becomes untenable. Electoral expert Djibril Gningue stressed the critical nature of the timing, noting that procrastination could push the electoral process into uncharted legal territory.
Institutional standoff deepens
The public confrontation between the head of state and the president of the National Assembly underscores the ongoing institutional friction between the executive and legislative branches. To date, no decree has been published to convene the electoral body, raising concerns about the government’s preparedness for the vote.
