With just days remaining before the grand Magal pilgrimage, the President of Senegal’s National Assembly, Ousmane Sonko, paid a customary courtesy visit to the Grand Mouride Khalif, Serigne Mountakha Mbacké, in Touba. The delegation, which included numerous deputies and Pastef party officials, underscored the enduring ties between the state and the Mouride brotherhood amid a period of heightened public debate.
The visit held particular significance as Sonko took the opportunity to honor the legacy and contributions of Serigne Touba, the revered founder of the Mouride Islamic movement. « Our joy and respect for Serigne Touba are boundless, » he remarked, emphasizing the spiritual leader’s teachings, life journey, and guiding principles. « His example serves as a beacon for anyone entrusted with leading a nation. His vision embodies patriotism and self-reliance—prerequisites for true independence. »
Sonko also reflected on a pivotal moment in Touba’s history—the construction of the Great Mosque. He recounted how Serigne Touba had insisted that disciples contribute just 140 francs each to fund the project, rejecting offers of external financial assistance. « He chose self-funding over foreign aid, » Sonko noted. « The journey from modest beginnings to Touba’s current stature stands as a testament to his foresight. Had his principles guided our own financial strategies, we would not be burdened by today’s staggering debt. » His remarks carried a subtle critique of public fiscal management.
Ending on a forward-looking note, Sonko invoked the wisdom of Serigne Cheikh Gaindé Fatma: « Ask what each citizen can contribute, and invest transparently so that all may see. » This principle encapsulates his vision for governance—rooted in collective effort and accountability.
