Niamey hosts pivotal Sahel-Russia diplomatic talks to boost regional cooperation
Niamey, the capital of Niger, became the epicenter of high-stakes diplomatic engagement this week as the second round of ministerial consultations between the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) and Russia convened on July 8. The gathering brought together foreign affairs chiefs from Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso alongside Russia’s top diplomat, Sergey Lavrov.
Bakary Yaou Sangaré of Niger, Abdoulaye Diop of Mali, and Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré of Burkina Faso engaged in intensive discussions that yielded concrete outcomes on shared diplomatic priorities. Diop highlighted the fruitful and frequent exchanges between AES and Russia, emphasizing their tangible impact—spanning military cooperation to economic and trade partnerships—all underpinned by a unified strategic vision.
The Sahel bloc’s ministers underscored the urgency of bolstering counterterrorism efforts through deeper military collaboration, with a clear focus on enhancing the operational readiness of the AES Unified Force. They also reaffirmed the need to accelerate economic integration aligned with the bloc’s Second-Year Roadmap.
Lavrov, addressing the assembly in Niamey, reiterated Russia’s unwavering commitment to a mutually advantageous partnership with the AES. He reaffirmed Moscow’s solidarity in supporting regional security initiatives and its dedication to fostering sustainable development that improves livelihoods across the Sahel.
This meeting followed the inaugural AES-Russia consultations held in Moscow in April 2025, marking a key milestone in Sergey Lavrov’s ongoing African diplomatic tour.
