The Bénin and Canada have unveiled a new permanent framework for political and diplomatic dialogue, designed to formalize ongoing consultations between Cotonou and Ottawa while ensuring consistent monitoring of shared commitments. The announcement was made by the Bénin Ministry of Foreign Affairs via the X social media platform on August 5, 2026.
Strengthening bilateral cooperation through structured governance
This initiative was marked by the signing of a memorandum between Bénin’s Deputy Foreign Minister Amori Brunet and Canada’s Foreign Minister Anita Anand. According to an official statement from the Bénin chancellery, the agreement aims to “ensure the follow-up of mutual pledges, prepare upcoming joint initiatives, and enhance coordination on regional and international matters of common interest.”
The establishment of this permanent dialogue mechanism builds upon decades of cooperation that began in 1962, when the two nations first established diplomatic relations. Over the years, their partnership has thrived in areas such as economic development support, public health, and education. Bilateral trade volume has consistently exceeded CAD 40 million annually.
Institutionalizing diplomatic engagement with sectoral coordination
The formalization of this agreement followed the presentation of credentials by Canada’s newly accredited ambassador, Evedabi, on August 3, 2026. The credentialing ceremony led to a series of technical working sessions involving key Bénin government officials.
These discussions engaged Hugues Oscar Lokossou, Deputy Minister in charge of External Resource Mobilization and Debt Management, alongside Shegun Bakari, Minister of Tourism, Foreign Trade, Industry, and Private Investment Promotion. This permanent framework underscores a renewed bilateral governance structure, cementing the long-term commitment of both nations to advancing their shared diplomatic and economic objectives.
