President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema recently inaugurated Gabon’s inaugural data center, a significant milestone located within the Nkok Special Economic Zone. This cutting-edge facility, brought to fruition by ST Digital Data Center Services, marks a pivotal moment for the nation’s digital landscape. Concurrently, a crucial memorandum of understanding was formalized between the Ministry of Digital Economy, Digitalization and Innovation and ST Digital, establishing a framework to foster the growth of Gabonese startups.

This twin initiative is strategically designed to fortify local data hosting capabilities, enhance national cybersecurity defenses, and accelerate Gabon’s broader digital transformation journey. Certified as Tier III compliant, this infrastructure meets rigorous international standards, ensuring robust performance and reliability. Its implementation is set to significantly boost national data storage capacities, provide essential support for cloud computing services, and offer vital assistance to both governmental administrations and private enterprises. Ultimately, this endeavor aims to solidify Gabon’s digital sovereignty, a clear objective articulated by the head of state.

Under this innovative partnership, emerging Gabonese startups will gain privileged access to a suite of professional digital services. Selected beneficiaries can expect a dedicated virtual machine, complemented by 120 GB of SSD storage, 8 GB of random access memory (RAM), and four virtual processors. Additionally, they will receive a public IP address, an an SSL certificate for secure communications, comprehensive technical support, and highly preferential service rates.

The Ministry of Digital Economy will play a crucial role in identifying eligible startup beneficiaries, actively promoting local data hosting solutions, and spearheading awareness campaigns focused on cybersecurity best practices. Laïka Mba, Director General of ST Digital, emphasized the profound significance of this development, stating, ”The establishment of a national data center in Gabon transcends mere technological achievement; it represents a definitive act of sovereignty.” She further elaborated, ”This facility provides an inviolable guarantee that our state secrets, national archives, essential public services, and the sensitive data of our citizens will no longer rely on external, foreign-based infrastructures.”
