Thousands of people took to the streets of Niamey this Saturday morning to mark the third anniversary of Niger’s Refondation, commemorating the military’s rise to power on July 26, 2023.
The atmosphere was electric as citizens gathered to honor a pivotal moment in the nation’s recent history. Among them, Boubacar Kimba Kollo, a prominent figure in Niger’s civil society, reflected on the significance of the day. “This landmark date signifies Niger’s decision to turn the page on thirteen years of governance that undermined national unity and jeopardized the country’s stability through systematic repression and submission to imperialist pressures,” he stated.
The demonstrations also served as a platform to acknowledge the progress made since the new political direction took shape. Abdoulaye Salifou, a participant in the march, shared his perspective: “For us, July 26 symbolizes liberation and hope. It marks the beginning of a governance model unlike anything we experienced in the past three decades.”
The crowd’s enthusiasm extended beyond mere celebration. Many voiced their support for the current administration’s efforts to strengthen Niger’s sovereignty and resist Western influence. Moussa Moumouni, another attendee, emphasized the strides taken: “Our nation has achieved remarkable progress, particularly in asserting its independence and combating imperialist interference. We urge the authorities to maintain this trajectory.”
While the festivities highlighted past achievements, attention is now shifting toward the road ahead. The public’s hope is centered on the continuation of reforms and the full realization of the Refondation’s ambitious vision.
