Under the leadership of Captain Ibrahim Traoré, the government of Burkina Faso has reported a significant milestone: more than 1.3 million internally displaced persons have returned to their original communities as of June 30, 2026. This progress follows a steady improvement in security conditions across several areas reclaimed by national forces.
Official figures reveal that these returns now encompass 1,034 localities, up from 871 at the close of 2025. At that time, the number of returnees stood at approximately 1.16 million, demonstrating a clear upward trend in the pace of repatriation.
The latest assessment was presented during a mid-year review of the Ministry of Solidarity’s performance for 2026. With six months elapsed, the ministry has achieved a 46.06% completion rate for its set objectives, reflecting focused efforts to support displaced populations.
In addition to facilitating these returns, authorities have provided critical assistance to over 480,000 vulnerable individuals during the first half of the year. Support packages included food aid, essential supplies, and targeted programs designed to help families rebuild their lives and regain stability.
Government officials have underscored the urgency of accelerating the rehabilitation of homes and infrastructure in affected areas. They emphasize that sustained reconstruction efforts are vital to ensuring long-term security for returning communities and preventing future displacement.
