The University of Datcha marks a new chapter in Togo’s higher education landscape. During a recent cabinet meeting, the government confirmed the appointment of Professor Essohanam Batchana as its inaugural president. A historian and academic specialist in political history and international relations, Batchana previously served as Director of Academic Affairs and Registrar at the University of Lomé, bringing invaluable institutional expertise to this pioneering role.
Academic leadership team takes shape
To ensure a strong foundation, Batchana will be supported by Professor Kperkouma Walla, a prominent botanist and plant ecology expert, who has been named the university’s first vice-president. Together, this accomplished pair will spearhead the development of administrative, scientific, and pedagogical frameworks for Togo’s third public university.
Strategic vision for regional development
Established in September 2023, the University of Datcha was created to address two critical challenges facing Togo’s education sector:
- Relieving campus congestion: Ease overcrowding at existing public universities in Lomé and Kara by expanding access to higher education.
- Boosting local employment: Align academic programs with the economic, social, and cultural needs of the Plateaux Region, fostering regional growth.
The new institution is designed to meet future demands, offering cutting-edge programs in technology, applied sciences, and vocational training. This forward-looking approach ensures graduates are equipped with skills that align with both market needs and national development goals.
