Libreville recently hosted a special gathering at the Chinese embassy, marking the 99th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) of China. The event also carried deep significance as it coincided with the 52nd year since Gabon and China established diplomatic relations.
Addressing the audience, China’s ambassador to Gabon, Zhou Ping, highlighted the robust and evolving partnership between Libreville and Beijing. He noted that November will see Gabon’s President, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, undertake an official visit to China at the invitation of his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping.
The diplomat also reflected on key milestones ahead for China in 2026: the 90th anniversary of the Long March’s victory and the 105th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China (CPC).
“For over a century, the CPC has led the Chinese people and its army to achieve extraordinary contributions to national independence, country development, and the building of socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new era,” he stated, addressing a room filled with high-ranking officials and diplomats.
Stronger ties through shared values and cooperation
In a world marked by “profound shifts and conflicts,” Zhou Ping reaffirmed Beijing’s commitment to peace and dialogue. He emphasized the “four global initiatives” proposed by President Xi Jinping—focused on development, security, civilization, and international governance—as guiding principles for global peace and progress.
The ambassador cited tangible examples of this partnership in action. In 2024, “the Ark of Peace”, a Chinese hospital ship, made its second stop in Gabon, delivering vital medical care. Additionally, Gabon recently welcomed a Chinese military medical mission, further strengthening bilateral defense cooperation.
The evening also served as an introduction to the new face of China’s defense presence in Libreville: Colonel Zhang Song, the newly appointed military attaché.
