The Beninese government has entered a decisive new phase in its drive to overhaul public healthcare and narrow the gap in medical access. Meeting in Council of Ministers on Wednesday, 7 October 2026, the executive approved contractual agreements with the selected firms, clearing the way for work to begin on fourteen health centers nationwide, alongside a full renovation of the maternity ward at the Ouidah zone hospital.
A stronger care network for underserved areas
This large-scale push is designed first and foremost to bring health facilities closer to people in rural and peri-urban communities. Beyond expanding capacity, the plan calls for these structures to be upgraded medically, so that the standard of care matches required health norms.
Beneficiary locations include Kpakpamè, Savalou-Aguah, Kountori, Adjohoun, Tchi-Ahomadégbé and Idigny. At the same time, the scheduled renovation of the maternity unit at the Ouidah zone hospital is meant to provide a modern, safe and dignified setting for monitoring pregnant women and newborns.
Discipline and oversight in delivery
As part of the priority investments under the Government Action Programme (PAG), the initiative aims to reshape public health in Benin for the long term. To ensure deadlines and quality standards are met, the Council of Ministers has instructed the relevant government members to maintain rigorous field oversight throughout the construction process.
