Can a single agro-industrial project transform an entire region? That is the question hanging over Bambali, the village in Sédhiou where Ousmane Sonko, president of the National Assembly, joined football star Sadio Mané to launch the SM10 Agro initiative. The event drew a crowd of officials, including Trade Minister Serigne Guèye Diop, and marked the official start of a massive agricultural processing complex.
Sonko accepted Mané’s invitation and traveled to the village, where he was welcomed by the promoter himself. The presence of such high-profile figures underscores the stakes: can this project deliver on its promise to reshape the local economy?
A billion-franc bet on local agriculture
The Bambali agro-industrial park, spearheaded by Mané, is designed to process local crops, with a particular focus on mango. The investment is estimated at 11.7 billion FCFA. The laying of the foundation stone signals the official start of construction in the footballer’s home village.
Processing capacity and job creation
Once operational, the complex is expected to handle 8,500 tonnes of mango per year. Projections also point to the creation of over 1,000 direct jobs, with a longer-term goal of 2,500 positions. The initiative aims to add value to local agricultural output and stimulate economic activity across the Sédhiou region.
But the question remains: will these ambitions translate into lasting change for Bambali and its surroundings? Only time will tell.
