In a gesture of gratitude, Morocco’s King Mohammed VI has officially designated the Tiznit-Dakhla highway as the Donald J. Trump Highway, a move announced through a letter from the monarch to the former US president. The decision was made public on August 1, following the monarch’s communication dated July 2.

In his letter, King Mohammed VI expressed his intention to honor Donald Trump’s “historic recognition in 2020 of Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara”, a gesture the king described as “forever etched in the memory of Moroccans.”

Stretching across 1,055 kilometers, the highway is now recognized as “Africa’s longest road infrastructure,” according to the Moroccan monarch. The announcement comes as a significant diplomatic milestone, reinforcing ties between Rabat and Washington.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump took to his Truth Social platform to celebrate the honor, writing on July 26: “Thank you to His Royal Highness King Mohammed VI… What an immense honor! I look forward to one day driving the entire length of this magnificent highway—hopefully soon!” While the statement reflects Trump’s enthusiasm, Moroccan authorities have yet to confirm any plans for his visit.

The Western Sahara, a territory claimed by both Morocco and the pro-independence Polisario Front, remains a contentious issue in regional diplomacy. Morocco’s decision to name the highway after Trump follows the former US president’s 2020 decision to recognize Moroccan sovereignty over the region, a move that reshaped international perceptions of the decades-long dispute.
