In a gesture that mirrors his own branding style, Morocco has paid tribute to former US President Donald Trump by naming a major highway after him. The decision, announced by the official Moroccan news agency MAP, reflects the deep appreciation of King Mohammed VI for Trump’s pivotal role in recognizing Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara in 2020.
The newly christened “Donald J. Trump Highway” spans an impressive 1,055 kilometers, making it the longest road infrastructure in Africa. This monumental project connects the southern city of Tiznit to Dakhla, a key economic hub in the disputed territory. The highway, still under construction in parts, underscores Morocco’s commitment to developing its southern regions while reinforcing its claim over Western Sahara.
In a formal letter dated July 2, King Mohammed VI informed Trump of the honor, emphasizing that the decision was made to commemorate the US president’s historic stance. The monarch wrote, “Your historic recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara in 2020 will forever remain etched in the memory of Moroccans.”
Trump’s 2020 backing: A turning point for Western Sahara
The decision to name the highway after Trump follows his sudden endorsement in December 2020 of Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara. This move was part of a broader diplomatic agreement that also included the normalization of relations between Morocco and Israel. The autonomy proposal, which grants significant self-governance to Western Sahara while maintaining Moroccan sovereignty, has since been championed by the US as the only viable path to a lasting solution.
Western Sahara, a former Spanish colony rich in phosphate reserves and abundant fishing grounds, has been a flashpoint for decades. Controlled largely by Morocco, the territory remains on the United Nations’ list of non-self-governing territories. The conflict pits Rabat against the Polisario Front, a Sahrawi independence movement backed by Algeria, prolonging a stalemate that has lasted nearly five decades.
A mutual display of appreciation
Trump responded to the Moroccan gesture with enthusiasm on his social media platform, Truth Social. “Thank you to His Royal Highness King Mohammed VI… What an incredible honor! I look forward to driving the entire length of this magnificent highway someday—hopefully soon!” he posted on July 26, though Moroccan officials have not confirmed his plans to visit.
In a reciprocal message marking the 27th anniversary of King Mohammed VI’s accession to the throne, Trump reaffirmed his unwavering support for Morocco’s autonomy plan. The US president stated that the proposal remains “the only basis for a fair and lasting solution” to the conflict. He added, “Any other path perpetuates the status quo, which is unacceptable.”
The highway project, initiated by the king in 2015, reflects Morocco’s strategic investment in its southern territories. The route includes a fast lane from Tiznit to Laâyoune, the de facto capital of Western Sahara, and extends to Dakhla via an upgraded national road. With an estimated cost of €850 million, the infrastructure is a testament to Morocco’s long-term vision for the region.
