Facing intense pressure from violent non-state armed groups, notably the Al-Qaïda-affiliated Jama’at Nasr al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) and the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (EIGS), military leaders in Niamey are compelled to broaden their external support to sustain operational effectiveness on the ground.
Amidst this challenging security landscape, Algeria has delivered a substantial consignment of military hardware to the Nigerien armed forces. This critical emergency provision includes four helicopters—specifically two Mi-24V combat aircraft and two Mi-171 tactical transport helicopters—along with essential munitions, spare parts, and comprehensive logistical and maintenance support equipment.
The operational challenges
From a tactical perspective, Niger’s armed forces are engaged in a complex war of attrition. Recent clashes and ambushes, widely attributed to JNIM in the western regions and EIGS along the border areas, underscore an urgent requirement for enhanced air mobility and close-range firepower.
