UNESCO Mali joins 32nd national reforestation campaign launch

The 32nd edition of Mali’s national reforestation campaign, themed “Youth at the heart of environmental citizenship for a greener, more resilient Mali”, officially kicked off in Bamako on July 26, 2026, at the Palais des Pionniers.

Led by Mr. Ali-Mohamed Sinane, UNESCO Mali’s Head and Acting Representative, the delegation participated in the ceremony chaired by General Abdoulaye Maïga, Prime Minister and Head of Government, representing the Transition President.

National mobilization for ecological restoration

This year’s campaign, organized under the patronage of the Malian government, brought together government officials, national institutions, technical and financial partners, civil society representatives, the private sector, women’s associations, and youth organizations.

The initiative aims to plant 21 million trees across Mali during the rainy season, strengthening national efforts to restore ecosystems, combat desertification, and preserve natural resources. The campaign places special emphasis on youth engagement as key players in the ecological transition.

UNESCO Mali’s commitment to environmental resilience

By participating in the launch, UNESCO Mali reaffirmed its support for community awareness, capacity-building for local actors, and the promotion of innovative solutions to enhance ecosystem resilience against environmental and climate challenges.

The campaign aligns with Mali’s broader goals of sustainable development and climate action, contributing directly to SDG 13—urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.

The event highlighted the importance of collaboration between government, international organizations, and local communities in addressing environmental degradation and promoting sustainable practices across Mali.
