The Ivory Coast has once again expressed its unwavering backing for Morocco’s full territorial sovereignty, including over the Sahara region, following high-level diplomatic talks in Rabat. This commitment was formalized in a joint statement issued after meetings between Morocco’s Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and Ivory Coast’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Nialé Kaba, who was on an official working visit to the Kingdom.

Consistent diplomatic alignment with Morocco’s position

During the discussions, Ivory Coast’s top diplomat renewed her country’s long-standing support for Rabat’s stance, describing it as a “constant and unwavering” alignment with Morocco’s territorial integrity. The West African nation’s position underscores the depth of bilateral relations, which have strengthened significantly in recent years through mutual cooperation initiatives.

International recognition of Morocco’s autonomy initiative

Ivory Coast also welcomed the United Nations Security Council’s adoption of Resolution 2797, which endorses Morocco’s autonomy plan as the most serious and credible basis for a lasting resolution to the regional dispute. The country further highlighted its decision to open a general consulate in Laâyoune in 2020, a tangible demonstration of its commitment to deepening bilateral ties.

In response, Morocco’s Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita conveyed the Kingdom’s deep appreciation for Ivory Coast’s consistent support. He emphasized the resilience of the strategic partnership between both nations, built on mutual trust and a robust framework of South-South cooperation.
